EMDR Therapy That Takes MassHealth (Medicaid)

Yes, you can get EMDR with MassHealth

Finding a trauma therapist who takes MassHealth can feel impossible. We're one of the few EMDR practices in Massachusetts that is in-network with MassHealth (Medicaid), and we verify your exact coverage before your first session — at no cost to you.

Does MassHealth cover EMDR therapy?

July 2026 · By Sherly Millan, LICSW

Yes. MassHealth is Massachusetts' Medicaid program, and it covers outpatient mental health treatment. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is billed as standard outpatient psychotherapy — the same category as any other talk therapy — so it is covered the way your other mental health care is covered.

EMDR is not an experimental or add-on service. It is an evidence-based therapy recommended by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association for trauma, and it is delivered by a licensed clinician. That means it does not need special or separate approval to be a covered benefit.

At EMDR Unlocked, we are in-network with MassHealth. Very few EMDR-focused practices in Massachusetts are, which is exactly why we want to make this simple: you deserve real trauma care, and your insurance is meant to help you get it.

What most MassHealth members pay: usually $0

Most MassHealth members have no copay for outpatient behavioral health visits. In practice, that usually means you pay nothing out of pocket to see us for EMDR — no per-session fee, no surprise bill in the mail.

When we're in-network with your plan, we bill MassHealth directly. You don't need to submit paperwork, pay up front and wait for a reimbursement, or chase down a superbill. We handle the billing so you can focus on healing.

Cost should never be the reason someone can't begin healing. When your coverage does the heavy lifting, the only thing left to bring is yourself.

Because we bill in-network, there's no out-of-network superbill to file and no reimbursement to wait on. If anything about your specific plan changes what you'd pay, we'll tell you before we ever begin.

One thing to check: your MassHealth plan type

Here's the honest nuance. MassHealth members can be enrolled in different plan types, including managed-care plans (sometimes called ACOs or MCOs) that run their behavioral health benefits through a partner organization. Because of that, network status can differ depending on which MassHealth plan type you have.

We don't want you to guess. During your free consultation we check your exact plan and tell you plainly whether we can see you in-network — and if we can't, we'll point you toward good options rather than leaving you stuck.

What to have ready for your free consultation

The only thing you really need is your MassHealth member ID (it's on your card). With that, we can confirm your plan type and your coverage before your first session.

The free 15-minute consultation is a relaxed phone or video call — no pressure, no commitment. It's a chance to ask questions, see if we're a good fit, and get a clear answer on coverage. You can book your free EMDR consultation whenever you're ready.

EMDR over telehealth is covered, too

Our practice is 100% telehealth, serving clients across Massachusetts by secure video. Massachusetts requires health plans to cover telehealth mental health visits the same as in-person care, so seeing us virtually with MassHealth is covered just like an office visit would be — with the added comfort of doing the work from a space where you already feel safe.

Common questions about MassHealth and EMDR

Do I need a referral for EMDR with MassHealth?

For outpatient therapy, most MassHealth members don't need a referral to start. We'll confirm the specifics of your plan during your free consultation so there are no surprises.

Is EMDR really covered, or only regular talk therapy?

EMDR is psychotherapy — it's delivered by a licensed clinician and billed as outpatient mental health care. It's covered the same way any covered therapy visit is.

What if my MassHealth plan isn't one you're in-network with?

We'll tell you honestly during the consultation and help you understand your options, rather than starting care that your plan won't cover in-network.
