What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help people process traumatic memories and distressing life events. Whether you're in downtown Amherst, the surrounding neighborhoods, or anywhere in Massachusetts, our virtual EMDR sessions make healing accessible from the comfort of your own space.
Conditions We Treat in Amherst
EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of mental health concerns. Residents of Amherst seek our services for:
PTSD & Trauma
You've tried talk therapy, but the nightmares haven't stopped. The flashbacks still come without warning. EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories from accidents, abuse, loss, or other life-changing events — reducing flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance so you can feel safe again.
Anxiety Disorders
The racing thoughts won't quiet down. You cancel plans, avoid situations, or lie awake at night. Whether it's generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, or phobias, EMDR addresses the root causes — not just the symptoms — so relief actually lasts.
Depression
You're going through the motions, but nothing feels like it used to. The heaviness stays no matter what you try. EMDR helps process the painful experiences and negative beliefs feeding your depression, helping you rebuild hope, energy, and self-worth.
Complex Trauma
It didn't start with one event — it built up over years. Childhood wounds, prolonged stress, or repeated painful experiences left marks that talk therapy alone hasn't reached. EMDR provides a safe framework for healing at your own pace, layer by layer.
Why Virtual EMDR Works
Research shows virtual EMDR produces the same outcomes as in-person sessions. Plus, you process in the comfort and safety of your own home — no commute, no waiting room, no time lost. Many clients tell us they actually feel more comfortable opening up from their own space.

Who Benefits from EMDR Therapy in Amherst?
EMDR therapy helps busy professionals managing work stress, parents dealing with overwhelm, students facing academic pressure, healthcare workers experiencing secondary trauma, first responders coping with job-related stress, and anyone struggling with unresolved trauma, persistent anxiety, or depression. If traditional talk therapy hasn't brought the relief you need, EMDR's unique approach to processing trauma may be the breakthrough you've been seeking.
Amherst doesn't have a single demographic — it has several, all under pressure. UMass undergrads navigating their first real independence while managing depression or panic attacks. International students at Amherst College or Hampshire holding homesickness, visa stress, and academic perfectionism all at once. Graduate students and postdocs in the Du Bois tower or the ILC stuck at the dissertation wall, convinced their advisor has finally figured out they don't belong. Faculty racing a tenure clock that has been ticking the whole time. Staff and townspeople who work alongside all of them and carry their own histories. EMDR is well-suited to every one of these because it doesn't require you to narrate every detail of what happened or what you're afraid of — it works directly on the stuck memories and negative core beliefs ("I'm a fraud," "if I slow down I'll fail," "something is wrong with me") that keep your nervous system locked into overdrive. Sherly Millan offers sessions in English or Spanish, evenings and weekends, from wherever you already are.
